November Meeting and Membership Renewal Information
Our next meeting is Monday November 6th at 7:30pm at the Optimist’s Club, Stoney Creek.  We will be taking nominations for positions on the board of directors for the elections to be held at our December meeting.  Please give some thought to taking an active role in the operation of your club.  If you are willing to stand for election, please let someone know so they can nominate you.  If there is someone you wish to nominate for a particular position, please check with that person before putting their name forward to ensure they are willing to let their name stand.

Club memberships for 2018 will available for those wishing to sign up. You will need to show proof of your 2018 MAAC membership. Be advised that we will be installing new locks and keys for the field and shack effective Jan 2018.  As part of your membership renewal, you will be presented with, and must sign for, a new numbered key in exchange for your old key. Note that you must return your old key to receive a new one.

Also, please bring in something you are working on and share your story with your fellow members.  The “Show and Tell” is the most interesting part of the meeting.  You’ll never know how something you are working on might inspire other members to try something new, and grow within the hobby. See you Monday!

News From The October Meeting
At the meeting, Dusan presented the latest model of his projected full scale personal transport VTOL that he is pursuing. His intent is to continue to develop his concept through various models with the ultimate goal of building a full scale VTOL to enter the Boeing GoFly competition. More details on the competition and its $2 million prize can be found in the note underneath the below photos and on the official site here.

Dusan is looking for people interested to join his team whilst concurrently seeking sponsorship for his project.

RIP
Hans Howacker

Sadly, Hans Howacker, longtime enthusiastic RC hobbyist and past member of the Stoney Creek Hawks, recently passed away. Hans will be remembered for his many exploits in the hobby, generally centered around his desire to build large airplanes and the resultant quest to power them and get them airborne. RIP Hans, the hobby will never be the same.

A Celebration of Life for all family and friends will be held  this coming Sunday, June 4th, between 1pm- 4pm at the Grimsby Legion, 233 Elizabeth St, Grimsby map

A free BBQ and flying will follow.

Summer is getting Closer?
Saturday was a beautiful day for flying and we had a large turnout of flyers, including 5 new members, who huddled together to avoid the flooded pit area. There was a preponderance of jets, flying wings and gliders plus a couple of wings training missions taking place.

Getting ready

 Field Conditions
Unfortunately the Quarry has been pumping water into the creek causing flooding to most of the pit area and the outer reaches of the runway. Fortunately the raised portions of the field are clear and the grass has been cut making the large center part of the runway and the access taxiway open for use. Paul, our Field manager, has talked to the Quarry folk and hopefully a solution will be found otherwise it will be a few weeks for the water in the quarry to be drained.

Club Document Amendments
The Club's By-Laws and Membership Applications have been amended to include a new Club Temporary Membership. The aim of this 3 month membership is to encourage new members to enter the hobby and is intended to be issued in conjunction with, and mirror the same application requirements of, the new MAAC Introductory Membership. Start and end dates will coincide with the MAAC dates.

May Club Meeting
Monday, May 1st at 7:30pm will be the last meeting prior to the summer flying period. Come out and meet your fellow members. Don't forget to bring planes or parts for Show & Tell. We had six very interesting presentations at the last meeting as seen in the photos and video below.

********FREE MEMBERSHIP DRAW*********

A reminder that the March monthly meeting is this coming Monday, 6th Mar, at 7:30 at the usual location.

The Minutes of the February meeting are here. A short video of the meeting is here.

Indoor Flying

A few photos from our current foray into indoor flying at our new location. We have found the site to be a little small for the larger 30" inch models unless they fly very slowly. However, smaller models and drones are well suited for the gym. This past Sunday we had 5 drones flying, four of which were the new Blade Inductrix. Dale set up a course of gates to challenge the drone flyers skills which was great fun, especially for the those flying FPV for the first time.

So come on down and take part. It is every Sunday morning from 9am to 11am through to March 19th for Club members.  Click here for more info.

New Video
The video of the February Meeting is now uploaded and can be found here.

Field Clean-Up

 Frozen Finger Fly
Beautiful blue skies and zero degree temperatures made this the most weather-friendly Frozen Finger in many a year.  Rene won the award for braving the elements to be 'first in the air'. Although 'braving the elements' is a bit of a stretch considering the weather. Wearing shorts and sandals would have been a more appropriate attire to qualify for the award, and certainly manlier.  Many thanks to Fay for providing the chili.

October Meeting (Quick Recap)
16 members and 2 quests attended the meeting. This number falls short of a quorum (18) required to vote on any Club issue.  A copy of the full Meeting Minutes is here.

Dave gave a recap of the past year's accomplishments which included:
  • numerous upgrades to the field including the new fences, improved driveway surface and entrance way, and shack repairs and painting;
  • our annual mall show in April;
  • the hosting of the Big brothers, Big Sisters of Grand Erie in July (note: Dave read out a thank you letter we had received)
  • a very successful Fun Fly in August.
Guest Flying.  Dave reiterated that the use of the 3 free visits per year for guest fliers is intended for members of out-of-town Clubs who have their wings and is not for use of previous Stoney Creek Club members who have elected not to renew their membership. Previous club members who have moved well away from the area and were visiting can use the 3 free visits.

Christmas Dinner. There will be no stand-alone Club christmas dinner and video presentation this year. Instead, pizza and wings will be available at the December 5th Annual General Meeting.

Mall Show.  Due to the decreasing number of shoppers at the Eastgate Mall, the Club is currently not planning on a Mall Show in 2017.

Club Hats. Dave asked that those members who had signed up prior to July 1st and still had not received their free Club hats, to please see him. The hats are courtesy of Peter Ayache through his company Altecar

Show and Tell: There were no Show and Tells, however, a mini swap meet took place.

October Meeting
A sign that the summer flying season is coming to a close is the start of the monthly meetings, the first of which is this coming Monday,  October 3rd, commencing at 7:30 pm at the usual location.
Don't forget to bring your latest and greatest models for Show & Tell. There will also be tables available if you have things you wish to sell.
The Minutes of the May meeting are available in the MEMBERS area.

Stoney Creek Hawks Fun Fly
Saturday August 13th
Our annual Fun Fly takes place this coming Saturday 13th Aug. See here for more.

There will be free draws for numerous prizes (4 ARFs plus numerous other goodies) for those who sign up to fly.
We will also be selling raffle tickets for a Spektrum 6x and receiver
Events include Peter and his jet, a combat demo and a little fun thing with little planes for the kids. Plus there will be plenty of time for open flying.
Also, new this year, we will have a couple of trainers with buddy boxes for anyone who would like to try their hand at flying.
So bring out your family, friends and planes for a good time.
Food and refreshments will be also available at a very low cost.

 Field Renovations Update
If you have visited the field lately you will have noticed the many improvements made. The driveway and parking lot have been graded and additional gravel added. A new  boundary  fence, better utilizing the old posts, has added to the looks of the driveway. This is in addition to the new 200 foot spectator safety fence. All this, except for the grading, was completed using volunteer club labor. Many thanks to all those who contributed their time and effort to these projects.
The final touch was added this week with the installation of new warning and information signs by Paul. Included are the Field usage rules and the Flying Safety Rules.

Christmas Comes Early !!
Obviously we've been good boys and girls because Santa Claus (Rene in disguise) donated a professional 5 burner BBQ to the Club. Many thanks to Rene for the very kind gesture.

But Wait a Minute........
The previous post below was perhaps a little hasty. The consensus was that the driveway border turned out so nice that we should extend it to the parking lot, ergo, the trusty crew were recalled to complete the task.

Driveway Improvement Project Now Complete
The final step in the driveway renovations, the 'beautification' driveway entrance, is now finished with the addition of bordering posts. Many thanks to Rene, Dave R, Will, Garfield, Peter G,  Paul and Stewart for the great work!

Field Work Day - Job Done!
Paul "damn the weather, let's get this done", our Field Manager Supremo, press-ganged 16 hardy club members into accomplishing the annual field maintenance chores under quite adverse weather conditions.  The spectator safety fence was finished under the very capable stewardship of Rene "stretch that fence boys, stretch that fence " our Fence Foreman. And our interior decorator experts Mark, Dave, Don and Tim pooled their design expertise and painted the shack interior...wait for it..."to heck with it, let's go white."

Picture
Lined up for the obligatory 'hardy hero' shot we have Rene, Will, Paul, Stewart, Dave, Garfield, Peter G, Peter A, Clem, Mark, CY, Peter N, George and Tim. Missing are Don and Ian.

Weather is forecast to be cool and damp so dress warm. A free BBQ will be the prize for all attendees.

The Gathering of the Gnats

In Memoriam
Picture
Sadly, our long term member Harry Garber passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 3rd. Harry has been  a stalwart member of the Club, serving on the Executive in many roles including President. Always the first to volunteer, his dry sense of humour and sharp legal mind brought common sense to many of the issues that arose during the operation of our flying club.  His many contributions to the Club were recently recognized with the awarding of an Honorary Membership.
Harry is survived by his lovely wife Iris and his two children. The Club offers our deepest sympathy to his family.

RIP Harry. You will be sorely missed.

2016 Frozen Finger Fly
The Frozen Finger Fly held up to its name with temperatures around zero (-12 windchill) and winds at 38kph gusting to 55kph, making it a chilly and challenging event. Nevertheless 15 members turned out with 6 of them defying nature and taking to the skies.
Many thanks to our new President Dave, and his wife Fay, for providing the coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, cookies and most important, an excellent chili to help restore body core temperatures back to normal for the hardy flyers.
Once again, Ron the Brave won the prestigious 'Frozen finger Fly' award for being first in the air for the new year.

"Money  For Nothing and the KITS Are Free"
Chris Martin has donated 2 airplane kits available for free for the first two callers. They are a J
etco 54" wingspan AT-6 and a 72" Sig Ryan STA. The contents of the kits look complete, but the kit boxes are in poor condition and it does appear that they have been sitting around for at least 35 years.  Mark Salisbury has the kits so email him to collect your prize. No info on the Jetco but the SIG looks similar to this:

*UPDATE*: BOTH KITS HAVE NOW FOUND NEW HOMES

Peter obviously has a very accommodating spouse, as he revealed yet another gorgeous jet. His Diamond was purchased from the same French designer who built Peter's  Dassault Falcon scale model. Although capable of 400 km/hr, thanks to 50lb turbine, the landing speed is quite slow. A gyro is incorporated to offset any snaking resulting from the T-tail design. For more information, go to the Altecare website.

April Meeting

Don't forget the April meeting this Monday at 7:30. There will be a draw for a free membership.

Time Waits For No-one (and neither does Will the Treasurer)

The draw for the free membership will now be held at the April meeting.

Mall Show
The Club Mall Show is scheduled for Saturday, April 18th at the Eastgate Mall in Stoney Creek. This is an opportunity to promote the hobby and the Club to the general public. We have traditionally had a good turnout of Club members and their airplanes for this event. A short video of the 2013 show, taken from the 2013 annual Club video, is on the 'Video' page.

February Meeting Cancelled
Due to inclement weather, the Feb 2nd meeting is cancelled. The free membership draw will now take place at the April meeting.

Promotional Video
A short promotional video for the club has been added to the 'Who Are We?' page.

Website Update #2
The Members Profile page had too many photos which slowed down the loading of the page. Don't despair, your hero
shots are still alive and well and now reside on the Members' Airplanes page under the Gallery menu.

A Reminder
All members and visitors to our flying field are to be aware that there is no smoking allowed on any part of the field. The field is situated on the property of the City of Hamilton and is designated by the City as a park. According to  City of Hamilton
By-law 11-080, smoking is not permitted on any City parkland. Therefore, to protect our continued use of the field it is essential that everyone abides by the rules.

Website Update
A new Club Members Profile password protected page has been added and is slowly being populated with appropriate 'hero shots'.  I may have got some faces-to-names mixed up. Apologies if I have. Just email me any corrections.  I'm lacking photos of the new members so please help me out.

A form will be added to the Gallery which will allow members to upload photos to that section. Make sure the photos are appropriate for public viewing. (Yes, that means you John)

The next step will be working on a mobile version of the site. That will take a while.

Please email any suggestions/recommendations. Send any complaints here. They are more than used to it.

Next Club Meeting
A reminder that the next Club meeting is 7:30 pm, Monday Feb 2nd at the usual locale. Don't forget to bring your latest and greatest projects for Show and Tell.  The Treasurer will also be selling 2015 Club memberships. Make sure you bring along your 2015 MAAC membership or else Will will....well, let's just say it won't be pretty.

Your 60 seconds recap of the January Meeting
Will showed his 60 size Great Planes Escapade. He powers it with a Rimfire 80 and two 3S 5000mAh battery packs. Fully assembled it weighs about 8 pounds. Will is looking a little sad that it's still winter outside and he has to wait a while before he can fly it.

A New Club Member

The Club welcomed
Helmut Schmitter to the Club. Helmut is an experienced and well known flyer in the RC world. He flies IMAC, pattern, scale, and gliders.
Welcome Helmut. How about adding combat flying to that repertoire Helmut?

We have a winner!!!
Ron has the prestigious honor of winning the world renown 'First Hawk in the Air' award for 2015 at our recent Jan 1st Frozen Finger Fly,. Ron braved a windchill of -18c to win this coveted award. Stu became the 2nd in the air as his plane couldn’t wait for him to warm up, and  blew off the starting table for a short flight to the ground while Stu watched from his warm chair inside.
Congratulations Ron!
