November Club Meeting

The first winter meeting takes place this coming Monday evening (Nov 4th) at our usual location, commencing at 7:30pm. Minutes of the previous meeting are here.

2020 membership will be available for purchase. You must provide proof of your 2020 MAAC membership. Be advised that the date after which the $20 late renewal penalty fee will be applied has moved forward to December 31st vice February of the following year. So you only have this or the December meeting to purchase membership to avoid the penalty.

Starting this year, our membership cards will feature a Club member and his/her plane instead of the generic cover. The draw for the lucky member is taken at the previous year's annual Field Work Day. The winner for the 2020 card is Garfield. The downside is you may have to face questions from your spouses as to why you carry around a picture of Garfield in your wallet

In addition to taking nominations for the Exec elections to be held at the December AGM we will be discussing some improvements and possible changes to the field.

Show & Tell will be starting up again. At the last meeting we had an excellent turnout of presenters so hopefully that will continue. As in previous years, each presenter gets a ticket for each presentation he/she makes, for a draw at the April meeting for a $100 Skycraft gift certificate.  So bring out those new planes!

Field Work Day (change)
Please update your calendars with the new date for the field work day. It is now  Saturday, June 1st.

Update From the Field
Our Field Manager, Paul, has prepared the lawnmowers for the upcoming season. And though the grass is not quite ready for cutting, as can be seen from the latest photo, the field is hardening up nicely and some have already been flying.

April Meeting

Is scheduled for Monday April 1st (no, this is not a joke) at the usual location starting at 7.30pm. Be advised that this will be the last meeting prior to the summer flying season with the next meeting not taking place until November. The minutes of the March meeting are here.

We will be discussing the potential impact of the new Transport Canada regulation on Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) due June 1st.

We are also taking nominations for our vacant Vice President position.

A draw for a $100 Skycraft gift certificate will take place for all winter Show & Tell presenters. You still have a chance to enter the draw if you make a presentation at this meeting.

Be advised that members who have not renewed for 2019 will be deleted from the Club email list and denied access to the restricted Members area of this website after this meeting.

Membership Application Changes
At the March meeting two changes to the Club Membership procedures were approved by the members:

a) the current additional fee of $20 applied to late membership renewals will now apply to renewals after December 31st of the previous membership year vice the end of February in the current year. This will better help the Exec plan the Club budget for the new year.

b) a refundable $25 key deposit will now be applied to all new keys issued commencing March 1st. The key deposit monies will be held in a separate fund similar to our Insurance Contingency and Lawnmower Replacement funds.

Both these changes are reflected in the updated Application for Membership  form located here.

November Meeting
A quick reminder that our first meeting of the winter season is this coming Monday, 5th Nov, at the usual location. Meeting starts at 7:30.
Show and Tell presentations are welcome. We will also be taking nominations for the 2019 Exec positions in preparation for the elections at the AGM in Dec.

Indoor Flying (or the lack thereof...)
Sadly, as you are aware, our previous indoor flying location has been sold to a Grow-Op company. So much the progress of man.
A search for a replacement has so far been unsuccessful. There are two other locations available, run by different organizations, but available for the casual flyer. See further here.

Here's something that sounds like an April fools news item but sadly, it ain't April.  Players Paradise, our indoor flying location, has been sold to a grow-op business.  This is very unfortunate news as the site was ideal for winter flying and our relationship with the company was extremely cordial. We will be looking into other possible locations but unfortunately it will be very difficult replacing Players Paradis.

As an aside, any jokes about indoor flying and grow-op 'flying' will be considered in poor taste at this time.

Tony, CY and Ralph set up their EDF jets for a round of formation flying.

Paul got a great bargain on a jack for the lawnmowers...just $30. This will aid in the cleaning, maintenance  and blade removal operations. Paul demos the jack whilst Will, just in case there is any confusion on our part, points out which one is the lawnmower.

Field Work Day - CANCELLED
Hi Ho Hi Ho , It's Off To Work We Go' - Not so fast!!
Our annual Field Work Day is cancelled due to the fact that, well er, there is no work to be done.  Paul has already painted the shack and Will has cleared all the trash from the creek. Bottom line is that the field is in great shape and ready for use and flying is in full swing so come on out and fly. The only temporary hiccup is that due to the heavy spring rain the outskirts of the field are still quite damp, but this should clear up with the fine weather ahead.

Indoor Flying
The indoor flying season is coming to a close. There are only two more dates open before the season ends - May 2nd and 9th, so come on down and try it out.

Picture

Indoor Flying Update
The original schedule showed that there would be no flying on April 11th due to a tournament. The tournament is cancelled and we can now fly on that date.

Swap Meet - Monthly Meeting
We will be holding a casual Swap Meet prior to the April Meeting (Monday, Apr 2nd) commencing at 7pm. Doors open at 6:50pm to set up. Regular meeting will commence at 7:30pm as per normal. There is no cost involved and free coffee will be available. You are requested to take home any unsold items at the end of the meeting.

At the meeting we will be voting on the seasons budget so please make an effort to come down and make your voice heard. I will also be taking the annual Club Photo (dapper attire not essential).

Show & Tell - March 2018 Meeting
Congratulations to Dave Coniam, who won the free membership draw. Also the Club bestowed a Lifetime Membership award to Carl Small in recognition of his contribution to the Club. Carl is a past President of the Club and was one off the founding members.

Just a reminder that all Show & Tell presenters from the Dec 2017 to May 2018 meetings will have their name entered for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate from Skycraft.

Show & Tell - February 2018 Meeting

Carl presented a template he had made of a Dollar Store foam Flite Test Mustang. The model is relatively easy to build and quite cheap. He is recommending we use something similar for the basis of a Club mass build.

Another amazing scratch build from Carl.. His latest is a home made L-39 Albatross EDF jet.using balsa stringers, Dollar store foam board formers and hot wired foam wing.

Picture
Dusan presented a video of the flight of his Alip VTOL model, from which he hopes to build a full scale demo. The flight was successful although forward flight will require C of G improvements which he will incorporate in his next version.
Picture
Carl designed his own plans and had them transferred to acetate and projected on the wall to the scale he wanted. This is going to be a very light EDF jet.

February Meeting
The February meeting is scheduled for this coming Monday evening, Feb 5th, at 7:30, at the usual location. For those who have yet to renew their membership, be aware that Feb 28th is the last day to do so without incurring the late $20 fee.

Annual General Meeting
Pizza, wings, coffee and soft drinks were available prior to the meeting. Minutes of the AGM are here.

Points of  interest from the meeting:
- No nominations were received for the election to the Exec, therefore all incumbents will remain in place for 2018.
- The Exec are concerned at the continuing trend of poor participation at Club meetings. Low attendances hamper the successful running of the Club in that many times we are short of the numbers to make up the quorum required to conduct Club business. In addition to looking at reducing the frequency of the meetings, members will be canvassed on suggestions and ideas on how to increase interest in attending.
-  We had 3 Show & Tells at the meeting.

Frozen Finger Fly

January 1st 10:00am
Come to the field to welcome in the New Year. The fire will be a-roaring and home-made chili will be a-cooking. Coffee and hot chocolate will be on hand to ward off the cold (and looking at the forecast, it WILL be cold). So time to man-up and say hi to your fellow club mates. And for the first flyer to take to the skies will go the coveted 'First in the Air' award.

November Meeting and Membership Renewal Information
Our next meeting is Monday November 6th at 7:30pm at the Optimist’s Club, Stoney Creek.  We will be taking nominations for positions on the board of directors for the elections to be held at our December meeting.  Please give some thought to taking an active role in the operation of your club.  If you are willing to stand for election, please let someone know so they can nominate you.  If there is someone you wish to nominate for a particular position, please check with that person before putting their name forward to ensure they are willing to let their name stand.

Club memberships for 2018 will available for those wishing to sign up. You will need to show proof of your 2018 MAAC membership. Be advised that we will be installing new locks and keys for the field and shack effective Jan 2018.  As part of your membership renewal, you will be presented with, and must sign for, a new numbered key in exchange for your old key. Note that you must return your old key to receive a new one.

Also, please bring in something you are working on and share your story with your fellow members.  The “Show and Tell” is the most interesting part of the meeting.  You’ll never know how something you are working on might inspire other members to try something new, and grow within the hobby. See you Monday!

News From The October Meeting
At the meeting, Dusan presented the latest model of his projected full scale personal transport VTOL that he is pursuing. His intent is to continue to develop his concept through various models with the ultimate goal of building a full scale VTOL to enter the Boeing GoFly competition. More details on the competition and its $2 million prize can be found in the note underneath the below photos and on the official site here.

Dusan is looking for people interested to join his team whilst concurrently seeking sponsorship for his project.
